The Beginners Guide to Baoer Fountain Pens

If you are not familiar with Baoer they are a Chinese Pen manufacturer that makes some great inexpensive fountain pens. The quality of some of their pens is actually very good for the price considering that they are only a few dollars. As with a lot of the Chinese pen companies, some of their pens are inspired by other major brands including Montblanc, Monteverde, and Parker.

The Complete Guide to Baoer Fountain Pens

For those fountain pen snobs out there, this guide is probably not for you there are plenty of pretentious bloggers out there who write about and can eloquently justify the cost of a western or Japanese manufactured fountain pen that runs into hundreds of dollars.

This guide is for the rest of us who can appreciate the joys of writing with an inexpensive functional fountain pen. It is not intended to be an in-depth review of each pen but more of an overview to show which are the most popular fountain pens that Baoer makes. Although If I have done a full review for any of the pens then I will link to that review. If there are any pens that I have missed off or you would like to share your own experiences with a particular model of a Baoer fountain pen then it would be great if you could let us know in the comments.

The Baoer 051 has been around for quite a few years now and still going strong there are some reviews around 2014 although I am not sure when the pen was launched. The Baoer 388 is yet another Chinese fountain pen that pays homage to a well known western branded fountain pen. In fact, the closeness of the design to a Parker Sonnet is undeniable from the shape of the grip section and barrel to the simple gold band and arrow-shaped pocket clip. It looks like it is an all-metal pen that is probably made from brass and is available in several different finishes. This pen has a medium #5nib and is supplied with a standard twist-action piston converter and can take international standard size ink cartridges.

Most of the pens in this guide are listed as having a medium nib they shoulder be a #5 nib but there are no guarantees when it comes to Chinese fountain pens. they can be swapped out for different nibs. For more information take a look at our Fountain Pen Nib size and replacement guide. The great thing about Chinese fountain pens is they are usually inexpensive so they are ideal to practice on as you can throw them away if you get it badly wrong.

  4. I have collected a Baoer 801 Silver coloured from Bangladesh. It writes fine. But I couldn’t define its nib size. How can I confirme the nib size Plz?

    • If when the nib is out of the pen it measures 6mm across the end that goes in to the pen then it is a #6 nib However if when you measure it is 5mm then it is a #5 nib.
